How to Get Started
Gather Your Service Records
Locate your DD-214 (Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty). This is the foundation of every VA claim. If lost, request a copy through the National Archives at archives.gov/veterans.
Identify Your Benefits
Common benefits include disability compensation, pension, education (GI Bill), home loan guaranty, healthcare enrollment, and life insurance. Your eligibility depends on service dates, character of discharge, and disability status.

File Your Claim
Submit your claim online at va.gov, by mail, or in person at a VA regional office. We can submit on your behalf and track the status.
General Eligibility
- Served on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces
- Discharged under conditions other than dishonorable
- Some benefits require a minimum service period (typically 24 months)
- Surviving spouses and dependents may qualify for certain benefits
- National Guard and Reserve members may qualify based on activation orders
Federal Benefits
Disability Compensation
Monthly tax-free payment for veterans with service-connected disabilities. Rated 0–100% based on severity.
Eligibility: Must have a current diagnosis linked to military service. Any discharge other than dishonorable.
VA Healthcare
Comprehensive medical, mental health, and specialty care at VA facilities nationwide.
Eligibility: Based on service history, disability rating, and income. Most veterans with honorable discharge qualify.
GI Bill Education Benefits
Covers tuition, housing allowance, and books for eligible veterans pursuing higher education or vocational training.
Eligibility: Post-9/11 GI Bill requires 90+ days of active duty after Sept. 10, 2001. Montgomery GI Bill has separate criteria.
VA Home Loan Guaranty
Helps veterans purchase, build, or refinance a home with favorable terms and no down payment required.
Eligibility: Requires a Certificate of Eligibility (COE). Available to veterans, active duty, and surviving spouses.
Veterans Pension
Needs-based financial support for wartime veterans with limited income and net worth who are permanently disabled.
Eligibility: Must have served during a wartime period and meet income and net worth limits set by Congress.
Survivors & Dependents Benefits
Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC) and Survivors Pension for eligible surviving spouses and children.
Eligibility: Surviving spouses, children, or parents of veterans who died in service or from a service-connected condition.
Florida State Benefits
Property Tax Exemption
Veterans with a service-connected disability rating of 10% or more may receive a property tax discount. 100% P&T disabled veterans may receive a full exemption.

State benefits include free hunting and fishing licenses, reduced vehicle registration fees, veteran license plates, and access to Florida State Veterans' Homes.
Florida DVATuition Waivers
Florida offers tuition waivers at state colleges and universities for eligible veterans and their dependents through the Hazlewood Act equivalent programs.
Education benefitsEmployment Preference
Florida law provides hiring preference for veterans in state government positions. Veterans with a disability receive additional preference points.
